Like humans, pets can experience varying levels of anxiety related to present or past situations, and sometimes they are just anxiety-ridden in general. There are ways to ease anxiety in pets without resorting to prescription medications, including catnip, removing triggers, and even sleeping with your pet can ease their anxiety. The use of cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is becoming increasingly more popular for relieving anxiety in both humans and pets. CBD comes in several forms for consumption, including oils, creams, gummies, and even dog treats.

Causes of Anxiety in Pets

Common causes of anxiety in pets usually fall into two main categories. Situation anxiety is a kind of anxiety that includes being anxious in unfamiliar or excessively noisy situations, such as fireworks, thunderstorms, being around strangers, and travelling. Behavioural anxiety, on the other hand, includes generalized phobias such as being left alone (separation anxiety). Some pets, especially dogs, can also be fearful of either women or men (which may be due to past trauma inflicted by one gender).

In addition to these main types of causes, a pet can experience anxiety due to an injury or illness that causes pain or toxic conditions such as infectious diseases and severe allergies. For situational anxiety, often avoiding triggers or unfamiliar situations and environments will ease anxiety. Behavioural anxiety is harder to treat due to its ubiquitous nature.

Symptoms to Look For

Symptoms of anxiety in your pet can manifest in various ways with some signs being more obviously connected to anxiety than others. Common symptoms include:

  • Panting
  • Pacing
  • Trembling
  • Whimpering
  • Peeing and pooping in the house or outside the litter box.
  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive licking of the lips
  • General listlessness

These symptoms are unnerving, not only for your pet but for you as well. Luckily, CBD oil can be effective for relieving any of these symptoms.

What Is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol and is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about CBD since it comes from a plant that has compounds that offer psychoactive effects, or a “high”. However, unlike another cannabinoid – namely tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – CBD doesn’t produce a high. This is because THC and CBD connect with different receptors in the brain. In fact, CBD can lessen the psychoactive properties of THC. It’s becoming popular due to its health benefits and lack of a feeling of intoxication, which can actually worsen anxiety.

How CBD Can Relieve Anxiety in Pets

Research has shown that CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to soothe anxiety naturally. Throughout the central nervous system, the body has cannabinoid receptors that make up the endocannabinoid system. When the body releases endocannabinoid chemicals (or a cannabinoid such as CBD is ingested), they connect to the cannabinoid receptors to stimulate the body’s production of serotonin, identified as a mood stabilizer.

Because CBD is naturally therapeutic and non-intoxicating, as well as easy to take, it is appealing as a safe and effective treatment option for anxiety. If your pet is struggling with anxiety, consider giving CBD oil a try.
